💋 Thinking About a Lip Piercing? Here’s What to Consider First

Lip piercings are bold, beautiful, and one of the most versatile facial piercings out there — from the classic labret to edgy snake bites and the elegant philtrum (a.k.a. Medusa). But before you take the plunge, there are some important things you should know.

Whether you're going for a subtle statement or full-blown alt glam, here’s what to consider before getting a lip piercing.

👄 1. Know Your Lip Anatomy

Not every lip piercing works for every face. The shape, fullness, and movement of your lips will affect:

  • Where the piercing can be placed

  • What type of jewellery is suitable

  • How well the piercing will heal

Your piercer will assess your anatomy and recommend placements that will heal cleanly, sit comfortably, and look balanced.

🩹 2. Healing Involves Two Areas: Inside & Out

Lip piercings heal from both the outside skin and the inside of your mouth, which means:

  • You’ll need to clean both areas carefully

  • There's a slightly higher risk of irritation or swelling

  • Healing time is usually 6–12 weeks, depending on placement and care

💡 Pro tip: Healing may feel faster on the outside — but don’t stop aftercare too early!

🦷 3. Teeth & Gums Can Be Affected

This is a big one. Because lip jewellery sits close to your teeth and gums, it can:

  • Rub against or damage enamel

  • Cause gum recession

  • Create pressure spots inside your mouth

To reduce risks:

  • Get properly sized jewellery (often downsized after swelling)

  • Choose flat-back labret studs

  • Avoid playing with or biting your jewellery

Your piercer can guide you on biocompatible jewellery like titanium or bioplast that’s gentler on your mouth.

💧 4. Swelling Is Normal — Especially in the First Week

Lip piercings often swell significantly within the first 48–72 hours. It’s normal, but you’ll need to:

  • Use a longer post initially to allow for swelling

  • Avoid hot or spicy foods

  • Stick to cool, soft meals like smoothies, yogurt, and soup

  • Keep your head elevated when resting to reduce swelling

Cold compresses and sucking on ice (gently!) can also help in the first few days.

🍕 5. You’ll Need to Watch What You Eat (and Drink)

During the healing process:

  • Avoid spicy, acidic, crunchy, or salty foods

  • Rinse your mouth with alcohol-free mouthwash or saline after meals

  • No smoking, no alcohol, and no kissing during the early healing phase

  • Be careful with straws — they can tug on jewellery

Good oral hygiene is a must — brush gently and stay hydrated!

💋 6. Choose the Right Placement for Your Lifestyle

There are many lip piercing types, including:

  • Labret (centered below the lip)

  • Monroe/Medusa (above the lip)

  • Snake bites / Spider bites (multiple piercings)

  • Vertical labret (through the lip itself)

Ask yourself:

  • Does your job or school allow visible piercings?

  • Will it interfere with playing instruments, sports, or certain activities?

  • Are you ready for the maintenance and possible limitations?

If needed, some piercings can be hidden or minimised with discreet jewellery.

💎 7. Quality Jewellery = Better Healing

This is not the time for cheap metal. Low-quality jewellery can cause:

  • Irritation or allergic reactions

  • Extended healing times

  • Increased risk of infection or rejection

Ask for jewellery made from:

  • Implant-grade titanium

  • 14k or 18k solid gold

  • Bioplast (for oral-friendliness)

Also, make sure your jewellery is internally threaded or threadless — it’s smoother and safer for new piercings.

🛌 8. Sleeping Might Take Some Adjusting

If you’re a stomach or side sleeper, you may need to:

  • Change positions

  • Use a travel pillow

  • Avoid pressing your face into pillows

Sleeping directly on the piercing can cause discomfort and irritation.

🧼 9. Aftercare: Consistency Is Key

Daily care should include:

  • Saline soaks or sterile saline spray (for the outside)

  • Rinsing with alcohol-free mouthwash (for the inside)

  • Keeping your hands off your jewellery

  • Avoiding makeup, lip balm, or skincare near the area during healing

💡 And no — you shouldn’t twist or rotate the jewellery. That’s an old myth and will just cause trauma to the tissue.

🖤 Final Thoughts

Lip piercings can be a gorgeous expression of your personality — but they do require thought, commitment, and good hygiene. The more prepared you are going in, the smoother your healing process will be.
